The most unusual feature of the Pixma MG8120 is the 3.5-inch color LCD that can be tilted with touch controls that integrate seamlessly with the top cover. We find it weird to use with the more traditional navigation / selection buttons (always on).

Although we hope that Canon has included an automatic document supplier, the Pixma MG8120 is declared complete. You get automatic two-sided printing, an under-mounted 150-sheet tray for plain paper, and a 150-sheet rear vertical feed for all other media. The 50-sheet output tray opens automatically from the front when you start printing. The scanner closes the telescope to accommodate thicker documents. USB, Ethernet and wireless connections are available. The wireless settings work correctly on the PC. However, on a Mac, the printer did not work properly until installation with a connected USB cable. This can be a deviation from our test bench; but if you have the same problem, using USB can solve it. The Canon Solution Center EX software package helps you print, scan and copy jobs and is very easy to use.

In our tests, the Pixma MG8120 was fast enough for inkjet. Our text documents – ten pages of plain text and newsletters with some grayscale graphics – look sharp and print at 8.27 pages per minute (ppm) on a PC and 7.87 ppm on a Mac. Photos snapshot-sized colors on our PC platform are printed at speeds below 3 ppm for plain paper and about 2 ppm using Canon photo paper. The largest, highest resolution photo we used to test photo printing on the Mac took just 2 minutes – average speed. Monochrome copying (which takes about 17 seconds) and color scanning (20 seconds for a full page photo at 600 dpi and 55 seconds for the cropped part of the photo at 1200 dpi) are also fast.

Color images and copies show orange tint on plain paper (general trend for Canon MFPs), but these imperfections are less visible on photo paper. A simple monochrome text copy looks as good as the original, but the color scan looks pretty dark.
